Amsterdam

Amsterdam is one of those cities that gets a bit of a bad rap. Which is crazy because it’s actually in the top 10 of the safest cities in the world. I’ll be the first to admit I was initially put off by its reputation. But after visiting I now wish I could tack it on to every itinerary to Europe; it makes a great first European stop, just like London, and maybe even better.

What makes Amsterdam so special? Well there’s a reason people call it the “Venice of the North.” In fact, the city has 165 canals with a combined length of 60 miles. You cannot underestimate how lovely it is to see a classic bike leaning against a bridge over one of these picturesque canals. Or to sit in a canal-side cafe and enjoy a coffee or cocktail. I challenge you not to want to move there instantly (I know I did)!

In addition to the culture and cafes of this dynamic city, be sure to take in the charming canal ring houses with their narrow windows and gabled architecture. I’m a big fan of KLM’s Delft blue miniature houses that they hand out in business class, but even those don’t hold a candle to their real-life models (but do download the KLM Houses App, so you can see the minis alongside their historical counterparts).

Beyond the geographical appeal, the people of Amsterdam are diverse, friendly, and incredibly tolerant. They have this amazingly relaxed vibe and are pretty darn good bike riders on those cobblestones! The fact that English is widely spoken makes Amsterdam an easy trip and the Schipol Airport is a great hub for your next European destination.

So don’t think twice about it–just go! And check out my favorites…
